What is the BSMA and who can join?
The British Somali Medical Association is a not-for-profit organisation that supports Somali doctors and medical students in the UK and brings the British Somali healthcare community together. We aim to inspire, mentor and empower our members while promoting health initiatives that benefit the Somali community and society at large.
Full membership is open to Somali medical professionals and students based in the UK. Associate membership is open to Somali doctors and medical students based abroad, and to British Somali allied health professionals such as dentists, pharmacists and nurses.
How does the BSMA support its members?
Through professional development, mentoring, networking events and advocacy for Somali health professionals. We also run community health initiatives and research collaborations, and offer peer support for career growth and wellbeing.
Can people outside medicine contribute?
Yes. You can volunteer, offer expertise in areas such as IT or event management, or donate to our charity, the British Somali Medical Foundation (registered charity no. 1194268), which funds our not-for-profit community work. Anyone who shares our mission is welcome.
